DOBOZ

Doboz is that certain place where guys usually go hunting for girls. Yes I saw it. So Doboz nights, other than dirty, are filled with mainstream music, but the place is nice, it has a wood monster from Hello Wood hanging from a tree, that's some museum piece right there!

Schedule
Monday to Wednesday from 17h - 02h
Thursday to Saturday from 17h - 05h

DOBLO

I came here to see some DJ that I barely knew. Didn't work for me though, I felt displaced. Doblo is pretty expensive and older audiences are more fit to this place. Dob utca, on the other hand, has a lot of other places you can head too if you are annoyed.

Schedule
Monday to Friday from 14h - 02h
Saturday from 17h - 03h
Sunday from 17h - 01h

DÉRYNÉ

This place is super fancy although this small stop sign icon is clearly not passing that message across. I went there in my best friend's last day he was in this wonderful city, we needed to say goodbye with a proper lunch, and so we did, and it was damn delicious.
Oh, and they have their own bread booth of course, also fancy, you just need to dodge some bees in the summer and you're fine.

Schedule
Monday to Thursday from 07:30h - 00h
Friday from 07:30h - 01h
Saturday from 09h - 01h
Sunday from 09h - 23:30h

CULINARIS

Not a place to eat or have coffee, but a place to buy both the ingredients to do so. Culinaris has stuff from around the world, maybe you can find that expensive italian cheese there, yes parma, or maybe choriço, who knows?

Schedule
Monday from 12h - 19h
Tuesday to Saturday from 09h - 19h
Culinaris has three different stores, I am puting the one I usually go to. Check the website to see all the products online

CSIGA

This gotta be one of my favourite places in Budapest. Very accessible, people are cool, the food is great and cheap (600 forints if you take just the main dish), the sandwiches are gigantic and come with real bread, not the shitty burgery thing.
Anyway, it is so perfect I don't know why people don't go there more ofter, but in a way I am glad they don't.

Schedule
Monday to Saturday from 10h - 00h
Sunday from 12h - 00h

CSÉSZÉNYI KÁVÉZÓ

When I got in this café I started feeling like I was inside a church. People were really old, but that is ok, I just felt that I needed to tone down my voice a bit, it is very peaceful. The decoration was my favourite part: there is a display of old coffee grinders on the wall, they are beautiful! It makes a better art piece than a lot of stuff I've seen.

Schedule
Monday to Friday from 08h - 22h
Saturday to Sunday from 10h - 20h

quinta-feira, 20 de fevereiro de 2014

CSERPES TEJIVÓ

I came to Cserpes after a suggestion to try the Mangalitsa sandwich, which I didn't, and I had coffee instead, and that was basically my main Cserpes experience before I decided it had to bright lights to be comfortable. Then I never returned. But it is quite nice for a franchising.

Schedule
Monday to Saturday from 07:30h - 22h
Sunday from 09h - 20h

CSENDES TÁRS

Fancy brother of Csendes Létterem, smaller but with an older feel, Társ is more a little evening companion, more classy, with a nice wine selection and an outside place to sit in the beginning of Karoly garden.

Schedule
Monday to Sunday from 10h - 00h

Website / Facebook

CSENDES LÉTTEREM

Csendes is a very enjoyable place, I think I didn't explore properly still, it has a main big ruin pub room where you can vandalize walls free and happily, immortalising your presence in the building through a ballpoint pen. Csendes also has inside a vintage store called Nemruci and which seems pretty awesome.

Schedule
Monday to Friday from 10h - 02h
Saturday from 14h - 02h
Sunday from 14h - 00h

CSAK ART

A ruinish pub but a light small version of it. I didn't stay for long but it made the normal impression ruin pubs make: it is nice in a decadent way. The music was also very enjoyable (we listened to a classic I just had to search on youtube) and we had fun exploring the place.

Schedule
Monday to Thursday from 16h - 02h
Friday to Saturday from 16h - 04h

CÖKXPON

This place looks poetic as hell. I had the chance to be there before it moved from the city center. I think the concept is to have a more chill relaxing place, and this came through perfectly in Sziget Festival, where all the hangover people were just taking a time to lay down and relax under the colourful fabric stripes.

Schedule
Check the websites provided
The address presented is of Benthlen Theater, where now the events for the Cokxpon audience take place

COSTA COFFEE

Yet another big chain like California Coffee and Starbucks. Take it of leave it. I can barely tell these three apart.

Schedule
Open everyday at least until 19h

CORVINTETŐ

First time I came I got a little trauma so I never came back until I had a must-go goodbye meeting. That time it was good ol' 90's instead of the usual drum n' bass crap, plus seeing the sunrise form the roof was amazing until they kicked us out at 4 and I don't really know why. They also had a cool rooftop-cinema initiative in the Summer.
Anyway, for the D&B lovers, this is the place to go, specially on wednesdays, or so they say.

Schedule
Wednesday to Saturday from 22h - 06h

CHEERS PUB

Cheers is funny. It is pretty crappy looking, typical cheap bar, but it is near to Instant, so usually people end up there somehow either for pre-drinking or after-drinking. Dangerous stuff.

Schedule
Monday to Thursday from 11h - 02h
Friday from 11h - 03h
Saturday from 13h - 03h
Sunday from 15h - 24h

Website / Facebook

CHAGALL

Chagall is a good meeting place, the menus are using his artworks in an awful way though. But the food is delicious, the menus are ok priced and there are the habitués drinking coffee there every morning. No, not me.

Schedule
Monday to Sunday from 09h - 24h
The kitchen closes at 23h

CAT CAFÉ

I am picky with a lot of things but with Cat Café I am willing to accept the fact that it is a super touristic place because I am a cat person by nature and I just melt when I come in. I know the cat haters out there couldn't care less about this, but I also couldn't care less about that fact.

Schedule
Monday to Sunday from 10h - 22h

CASTRO BISTRO

How melodic the name of this place sounds. I like it a lot, it even has lunch menus on weekends, it is delightful. Also they have oat milk for the daring drinkers. The food is good and it is almost always full. Chop chop!

Schedule
Monday to Thursday from 11h - 24h
Friday to Saturday from 11h - 01h
Sunday from 14h - 24h

Website / Facebook

CALIFORNIA COFFEE

This is just here because it exists, really, it is a practical place to work and be I guess. But once in Hungary, I would say just stick to the more traditional local places and not this big evil chains.

Schedule
Check the website for schedules and locations.

CALGARY

I should make a list of my favourite places because this one deserves to be there. It is small and personal, they have cheap lecsó and I feel like I am inside my grandmother's closet. The beer comes in the can, who cares? So many objects to interact with, so many things to wonder about.

Schedule
Monday to Sunday from 16h - 04h

Website / Facebook

CAFÉ VIAN

I had a very funny evening here. I went to Vian in Liszt Ferenc Tér and ordered a soup which came with a slice of lemon, which I distractedly added to my water after finishing. I felt silly, but that should always be the feeling in this place. Vian is my favourite writer, but I don't love the place, so many things they could have done, so much potential for weirdness, but no, just plain.

Schedule
Monday to Sunday from 09h - 01h

CAFÉ MIRÓ

Miro is very touristic, but it doesn't really have a choice due to its location in Castle District. The food is a bit predictable, the chairs and furniture are interesting due to the Miro theme but they end up trying too hard and being to literal, even the logo is an in-your-face Miro allusion. But oh well.

Schedule
Monday to Sunday from 09h - 24h

CAFÉ ALIBI

How to define Café Alibi? Is it over recommended by TripAdvisor? Or maybe I am just to picky with overly fancy interiors. My only time there didn't make a memorable impression, but then again I only drank coffee. I like the concept though, maybe it was more interesting when it was pointing to please the law students from the college nearby.

Schedule
Monday to Sunday from 08h - 23h

BORSÓ MEG A HEJÁ

I had expectations for this place, but when I arrived there the food seemed a little bit dull and uninteresting. I am not doubting the quality, it was just I was hoping for something mind-blowing other than normal sandwiches you can find in a lot of places. Still,

Schedule
Monday to Friday from 11h - 19h

Website / Facebook

BUDAPEST JAZZ CLUB

I don't have enough money to come everyday but I sure wish I did. I like jazz. Any jazz initiative makes me happy, and these blokes usually know what has quality. Suiting up is not necessary but I would advise taking one step higher, at least not to have people staring too much at your cartoon character t-shirt.

Schedule
Monday to Sunday from 10h - 24h

BUDAPEST BAGEL

Nice concept with a nice space. And are they good bagels? For sure they are. And bagels aren't even that cool but this place sort of makes them hipsterish. Budapest Bagel (Atelier) is from the same dudes that run Telep, also a worth-to-check place.

Schedule
Monday to Friday from 08h - 24h
Saturday from 12h - 24h

Website / Facebook

BORS

I never understood the logo of Bors as it is such a nice place it asks for something better than a badly traced shoe to illustrate it. Google translator says it means pepper, I say the sandwiches and soups are very good. So go there for the food, and prepare to wait a bit.

Schedule
Monday to Saturday from 11:30h - 21h

Website / Facebook

BORDÓ

First thing you see form the outside: a figure claiming he is Bordó in old-school James Bond way. That being said, I have no idea how it connects to the place other than the word bordó relating to french stuffs. Nevertheless, it is a nice spot and a good plan B to change from Most's daily menus.

Schedule
Monday to Tuesday from 10h - 01h
Wednesday to Thursday from 10h - 02h
Friday to Saturday from 10h - 03h
Sunday from 10h - 01h

BOOK CAFÉ

It is grand! No so grand as New York café fortunately, so average people can still be comfortable while sitting there, except for our own reflection which we will have to face sometimes thanks to the mirrors on the walls. The ceiling is a sight just by itself, and when food is over, you can stroll by the book store.

Schedule
Monday to Sunday from 10h - 22h

Website / Facebook

BOBEK

If you want a night bar to chill in other than crowded Szimpla (and this one has absolutely no resemblance), Bobek might be it. It has an interesting outdoor space covered partially so smokers can still feed their addiction, and it should definitely be visited at night, when the darkness make places look better.

Schedule
Monday to Thursday from 13h - 24h
Friday from 13h - 02h
Saturday from 15h - 02h

terça-feira, 4 de fevereiro de 2014

BLUE BIRD

Blue Bird is proud of their high quality coffee beans. I think it is justifiable, the coffee is indeed good, and the place, although in a mainstreamish area, still retains some unique characteristics (such as the coffee tasting museum like room downstairs). The only time I was here I tried to read a book, but I was more interested in overhearing the conversation of a group of friends that had arrived.

Schedule
Monday to Thursday from 09h - 22h
Friday to Sunday from 09h - 24h

BALETTCIPŐ

This place comes in the Budapest guides, I don't know why though, maybe the food is nice, it is for sure cozy. I got some expensive hot wine there when I still enjoyed it but felt a little out of place. Am I too young for this?

Schedule
Monday to Saturday from 12h - 24h

ATRIUM

Atrium was under construction some time ago, creating its visual identity was one interesting college project that I didn't do. Still, the space itself is very suis generis with its chess pattern + red color + mirrors combo. I never got to watch any performance but by the name of the place it sounds like an epic unique experience.

Schedule
The café opens everyday from 09h - 24h

ARIOSO

Arioso reminds me of some kind of tea time place for ladies resembling the Queen of England. Probably this would be a good place if she would come to visit. Go drink a coffee, eat a macaron, smell the daisies and explore the cool shop.

Schedule
Monday to Friday from 10h - 19h
Saturday from 10h - 16h

APACUKA

Apacuka is the fancy restaurant right below Prezi building (probably one of the most beautiful spaces in Budapest). Prices aren't so cheap out of the daily menu, and the soup may come in a jug and be delicately poured over a weird crouton, but if you can run the extra mile, do visit this jazzy space.

Schedule
Monday to Thursday from 10h - 24h
Friday from 10h - 02h
Saturday from 12h - 02h
Sunday from 12h - 24h

ANKER'T

Anker't is the hot weather loving big brother of Anker. Yes, in here there is more dancing action. It is also one of the various ruin pubs in town, and the chosen one for the International Meetings Event on wednesdays.

Schedule
Wednesday to Saturday from 19h - 05h

Website / Facebook

ANKER

Anker is a fancy yet studenty place. It has a small stage were performances and concerts are held from time to time, but most of all, it has wonderful food and menu deals even at night.

Schedule
Monday to Wednesday from 08h - 01h
Thursday to Saturday from 08h - 04h
Sunday from 08h - 01h

ALTAIR

Altair is a secretive teahouse which can only be found by the ones truly looking for it. The wooden door is so discrete you can easily pass by. Don't miss it though, it is one of the best places in Budapest with is treehouse like structure. Take you shoes off, grab a pillow and thank me later.

Schedule
Monday to Sunday from 14h - 22h

AKVÁRIUM

Akvárium was once Gödör. Not anymore! This concert venue brings a lot of new bands to town.
Its big steps are perfect to sit on the sunny days. And on winter? Well, you can always take a hot wine inside or go to one of many concerts.

Schedule
Monday to Sunday from 12h - 02h (or until the ending of the events)
Ticket office is open everyday from 12h - 19h

Website / Facebook

A38

A boat happily floating in the shore of the Danube, A38 is a venue/restaurant, with events almost every day and concerts from the best bands. If that is not enough, it was elected the best bar in Europe.

Schedule
Monday to Sunday from 08h - 22h (or until the ending of the events)
Restaurant opens from 11h - 23h
